To help you work with your bike store to find your next bike, we suggest sharing what you know about your preferences with the bike specialist. We also suggest asking the nine questions below. If you don't feel your questions are being taken seriously or are uncomfortable with the answers you get, remember, you can always go to a store where you feel more comfortable.

9 Questions to ask at the Bike Store

1. What do you have in my budget?

There's no point in spending several minutes listening to the bike specialist talk to you about a bike you know is way out of your price range. The more expensive a bike is, the more options and upgraded features it can have. These extra options may add confusion rather than clarity, something to keep in mind if you are already feeling a little overwhelmed.

Start by telling the specialist what you have already considered, what type of bike you think you are leaning towards, and your budget range. This will help them quickly take you to the best options for you.

    2. Can you help me find the right size?

It's important to find the right size bike for you. This will make sure you can maintain the correct riding posture, preventing injury and keeping you comfortable. The right bike size also helps you have better control and handling of your bike. Bikes come in a range of frame sizes. The best frame size for you depends on the bike's type and shape and how those fit your stride length and reach.

      3. Can I take it for a test ride?

The best way to find out if you are comfortable on a bike is to take it for a short spin. Most bike stores will let you ride around the parking lot. A few might even let you take it for a longer trial. While you are test-riding a bike, consider its overall comfort and how easy it is to steer, brake, and change gears.

        4. Can the bike accommodate accessories?

Keep in mind which accessories are most important to you to create your ideal bike – one that is functional and stylish. Do you want a rack, bell, or drink holder attached? Make sure your new bike is set up or can adapt to your needs.

        5. Is the bike equipped with lights and reflectors?

Some bikes will come equipped with lights and reflectors. These are important for safety, and many places require that they are on the bike. If the bike comes with built-in lights, this may help cut down on costs or additional choices you need to make when buying your bike.

          6. What lights and accessories do you sell?

If the bikes you are looking at don't have all the accessories you want to get started, there's a good chance the bike store will have some options to consider. If it is something they sell, they may even be able to attach it for you. Don't forget to consider your aesthetic and an accessory's functionality when you are looking at accessories.

            7. Do you have different saddle options?

The saddle, or bike seat, can play an important role in how comfortable you are on the bike. Most bike stores have a range of saddles that can be fitted to your new bike. When choosing a bike saddle, it's essential to consider factors such as your riding style, bike type, body anatomy, and personal preferences for comfort and performance.

              8. Do you offer a maintenance plan?

You want to keep your new bike in good working order. Just like a car, bikes need regular maintenance to keep them functioning safely and at their best. Some bike stores offer maintenance plans or packages when you purchase a bike from them. This can help keep your bike's maintenance hassle-free.

                9. What frame material options do their bikes have?

If you are feeling confident and want to level up your bike shopping experience, ask what bike frame options are available for your preferred bike style. Bikes often come in aluminum, steel, or carbon fiber. Each material has its pros and cons in terms of weight, durability, comfort, and cost. Discuss your preferences and the typical terrain you plan to ride on to determine the most suitable frame material for you.
